Welcome to St. Peter's AME Zion Church

The "Mother Church of Zion Methodism in the South"

Welcome to St. Peter's AME Zion Church

St. Peter's African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in New Bern is the oldest AME Zion Church in the south. Now located on Queen Street, the church started with 600 congregants at its original location on Hancock Street as Andrew's Chapel. It joined the AME Zion Church when Bishop James Walker Hood arrived in 1863. Our mission is to spread the love and faith of Jesus Christ to all who seek it, and to provide a welcoming home for all who enter our doors.

Welcome to the official website of St. Peter's AME Zion Church, a historic African Methodist Episcopal church nestled in the heart of New Bern, Craven County, North Carolina. With a rich legacy dating back to its establishment in 1863, our church stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith, family, and community.

After purchasing the current lot building and relocating the congregation in 1914 a devastating fire in 1922 destroyed the church. It took the congregation 20 years to rebuild the existing edifice.  St. Peter's AME Zion Church holds a special place within the denomination. Revered as the "Mother Church of Zion Methodism in the South," we proudly embrace our role as the oldest existing African Methodist Episcopal Zion congregation in the entire South as we extent the love of Christ to all.
